This slow moving story of a young woman falling in love is told in exquisite style. Frances is an unusual young woman living with her mother in Camberwell after the Great War. They are forced to take in lodgers to cover the bills. The newcomers force Frances towards a reckoning with class, sexuality and the ghosts of the war.

The heroine’s sense of dislocation, genteel poverty and dreams of redemption are almost unbearably vivid. The plot may dawdle, but the extraordinary writing keeps the pages turning. A subtle, complex triumph.
